Have you ever wanted to monetize something that you create, or market a skill that comes naturally to you?
“When I attempt to create out of a strategic headspace that asks ‘What are people looking for from me?’, the creative vine withers really quickly.“
Combining Art & Money
Is it your dream to make a living from what you love to create, or would you rather not put pressure on your art to pay the bills?
Do you worry that adding a price tag to your art will tarnish the joy of creating?
Does it feel vulnerable to charge for something that means so much to you?
Over the past several years, writer Jess Janz has slowly grown her business to the point where her art can finally pay her bills — something she never imagined was possible. We discuss:
- Why creatives have a particularly strained relationship with finances
- How to price your work when you’re first starting out
- Why monetizing what you love can help and hurt your creativity
- Whether or not you should keep your 9-5

Financial Design
One misconception I hear about creativity is the idea that it only applies to obvious outlets (like writing or painting or making music) when really it applies to every facet of life — in the way you navigate relationships, express yourself in conversations, make decisions, design your space and routines, or manage your money. Every part of your life is shaped by creativity (or the lack thereof).
Becoming a full-time creative means applying a lens of design to every facet of life, including your finances. Designing a system for your money that serves you over the long term means you’ll only have to minimally tweak the same system as your financial needs evolve.
